Examining the data behind STEM careers

April 2024 | McREL’s CEO Bryan Goodwin explores whether the STEM job shortage is overhyped in his latest Research Matters column in Educational Leadership magazine. Stemming from anecdotal observations about job placement of recent college graduates, Bryan reviews data about the STEM labor market, its projected growth, and the workforce pipeline. His findings reveal that “the beating heart of the STEM workforce appears to be high-paying, middle-skill jobs that are needs to turn innovations into reality,” he writes. He challenges readers to use this data to better support students as they consider aligning their interests with future jobs.
