June 2023 | Providing students with the time for “academic talk” during class is critical for student learning, McREL consultant Michele Kimball explains in the latest issue of EdWeek’s Classroom Q&A column with Larry Ferlazzo.

Michele, along with other industry experts, provides advice based on the prompt: Everything you wanted to know about supporting English language learners to speak English but were afraid to ask. Michele shares that by alternating between direct instruction and small group work—and allowing students to do the verbal heavy lifting—teachers can practice purposeful, intentional, and explicit (PIE) strategies that are effective for all students, not just English language learners.

Learn more about the process and how it benefits all students in their speaking and writing skills by reading her full response. Read the post here.
