The U.S. Department of Education last week awarded McREL International five-year grants to operate the Region 8 and Region 13 Comprehensive Centers from October 2024 to September 2029.

The Comprehensive Center program assists state departments of education and school districts as they implement evidence-based policies and practices to improve the quality of instruction for all students, including students from low-income backgrounds, students from historically underserved groups, and students attending schools in need of additional supports.

The Region 8 Center will support Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The Region 13 Center will serve the western Pacific U.S. territories of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and Guam as well as the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau, which through their Compacts of Free Association with the United States receive education-related support services.

McREL has worked with schools, districts, and state education systems in both regions for many years, providing professional learning, technical assistance, research, and program evaluation services through direct contracts with schools and systems. In addition, McREL has previously operated Comprehensive Centers and Regional Education Laboratory (REL) programs in the regions. McREL serves these regions from its main office in Denver, a regional office in Honolulu, and staff located in Guam, Kansas, Palau, and Wyoming.

“It’s a privilege for us to continue to support teachers, principals, and education system leaders in these regions,” said McREL CEO Bryan Goodwin. “Over the years, we’ve seen firsthand the positive impact the Comprehensive Center program has had, helping states address their high-leverage needs and support high-quality teaching and learning.”
