Column highlights ways school leadership can support alternatively certified teachers

September 2024 | As districts react to teacher shortages by hiring more alternatively certified educators, school leadership can provide practical supports to help these new teachers succeed, McREL CEO Bryan Goodwin writes in his latest Research Matters column in the September issue of Educational Leadership magazine.

After sharing some unsettling statistics about teacher turnover, declining interest in teacher preparation programs, and teacher certification numbers, Bryan highlights lessons learned from a recent Texas study about ways to support teachers with alternative (or no) certification. For example, many of these new educators are looking for support with addressing student motivation and behavior, help with the “basics” (i.e., lesson designs, grading, and communication with parents), as well as support and examples of lesson plans.
