Column explores latest research on teacher expectations and student outcomes

October 2024 | While the principle that high expectations can drive better student outcomes has been confirmed in multiple studies, a new study looking at how teacher expectations transmit to students offers fresh insights on effective teaching practices, McREL’s CEO Bryan Goodwin writes in his latest column in Educational Leadership magazine.

The study first interviewed students to learn how they react to their teachers’ expectations and then followed up with classroom observations. The findings unveiled a “compelling causal chain from high expectations to student outcomes,” he writes. Bryan goes on to outline the four evidence-based teaching practices observed, all of which support the idea that students like to be challenged and encouraged to see how their hard work results in their success.
