Balanced Leadership Institutes at McREL

Goals/Objectives  To positively affect student achievement, school leaders need to know not only what to do but also how, why and when to do it. McREL's research on principal leadership, which addresses all the dimensions of effective leadership, is the foundation for our Balanced Leadership Institutes.

McREL offers a series of two-day professional development sessions in which practitioners learn about and apply the leadership responsibilities and practices identified in School Leadership that Works: From Research to Results.

Each session focuses on one of the four components of our leadership framework: Leadership, Magnitude of Change, Developing a Purposeful Community, and Choosing the Right Focus.

Description  All four sessions incorporate research on high-quality professional development and McREL's Knowledge Taxonomy of the four types of knowledge that lead to improved practices: 1) Declarative knowing what to do, 2) Procedural — knowing how to do it, 3) Experiential — knowing why it is important, 4) Contextual — knowing when to do it.
