Efficacy Study of
Reading Horizons Discovery

Help us learn if your students will benefit from adopting the evidence-based early literacy program Reading Horizons Discovery® (RHD).

Reading Horizons Discovery® (RHD) is a phonics-based foundational resource designed to supplement existing core reading curriculum. McREL is seeking district partners who are interested in implementing RHD to discover the program’s impact on your students’ reading & comprehension skills.

The study will begin with K–2 classroom teachers in Fall 2022 and will conclude in Spring 2023. Participating teachers will receive full access to RHD for the study year at no cost, as well as:

  • Access to a district- and/or school-specific dashboard that can be used to inform your data driven instructional and assessment processes

  • Professional learning and coaching support throughout the year

  • A suite of digital tools, professional development, and other benefits adding to a total per school monetary value of $25,000

What is Reading Horizons Discovery?

RHD is an early literacy, Orton Gillingham-based, systematic phonics instruction program that helps teachers align instruction with the science of reading and structured literacy.

What are we trying to find out?

RHD will be used as a resource to supplement existing core reading curriculum adopted by schools and districts. Our key research questions are:
  • How is RHD implemented in K–2 general education classrooms?
  • Does RHD improve teaching?
  • Does RHD improve learning?
  • Does RHD work better for certain student groups than for others?

     

Incentives for school and district partners

  • $200 stipend for school or district staff who are designated as points of contact for the study
  • Free access to RHD for the entire school year
