Topics Overview

After School Programs

Assessment, Accountability and Data Use
Effective schools create a culture of data use through valid, standards-based classroom assessments and data-driven decision making.
Curriculum

Diversity
 All means all

A key premise of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is that schools should provide a high-quality education to all students.

To help schools meet this laudable goal, McREL provides numerous resources, listed below, that support the success of all students, including those with diverse needs, perspectives, and cultural and economic backgrounds.

Early Childhood Education
Helping schools close the achievement gap early

Because achievement gaps are often evident even before students enter school, McREL has developed early literacy measurement and teaching techniques built on 30 years of rigorous research.

Our early literacy experts provide training and consulting in scaffolding early literacy to help teachers improve students' early literacy skills.

Education Technology

Using Technology to Improve Student Achievement

Research suggests that technology in schools can increase student achievement. But it takes more than simply putting computers in the classroom: to realize the promise of educational technology, your school needs a comprehensive, integrated technology implementation plan. To help you get there, McREL offers a variety of educational technology products and services, including school and district technology audits, in-depth consulting, and online and in-person technology professional development for elementary, middle, and high school educators.

Future of Schooling
We make decisions every day based on our perceptions of what will happen tomorrow, next month, or years from now — and our decisions are made stronger by better imagining the possibilities of the future. McREL can help you learn about factors that will affect education in the future and what actions you can take now to survive and thrive decades from now.

Instruction

Advancing the science of classroom instruction

McREL is a nationally recognized leader in the field of instruction, creating such research-based, teacher manuals as Classroom Instruction that Works.

In addition, we offer a wide variety of workshops and professional development programs that help educators use rigorous research to create more effective classrooms.

Translating research into effective reading and writing

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 calls on schools to employ research-based strategies for ensuring every child can read and write well.

McREL has translated rigorous research on literacy into a wide array of products and services, including scaffolding early literacy products used by four Early Reading First grant winners, the popular Teaching Reading in the Content Areas series of manuals, and a new publication coming in May 2005 from ASCD, titled Teaching Writing in the Content Areas.

Rural Education

Making a difference in rural education

McREL's long history of serving educators in the nation's heartland gives us a deep understanding of the challenges that confront rural educators — for example, overcoming professional isolation, recruiting and retaining qualified teachers, and offering advanced curriculum in small schools.

School Improvement & Reform

Helping schools get Success in Sight

By drawing upon more than 30 years of research on effective schools, as captured in our popular, ASCD-published manual, What Works in Schools, McREL helps educators and school leaders design and guide research-based school improvement efforts. Our new school improvement program, Success in Sight helps educators balance this "science" of effective schooling with the "art" of continuous improvement.

We invite you to explore the links below to find resources that can help you guide improvement efforts in your school and learn how McREL programs can help your school analyze data and use research-based solutions to raise student achievement.

Science

Making a difference in science education

As student achievement in science moves to center stage with the NCLB science testing requirement in 2007, McREL is well positioned to help your students measure up to the challenge with a variety of products and services.

McREL's science education experts provide a wide array of research-based, practical guidance designed to improve teaching and learning in science classrooms.

For example, our Designing Effective Science Lessons program provides educators with research-based strategies for improving student engagement and achievement in science.

Standards

Setting the standard for standards-based education

McREL is a nationally recognized leader in standards-based education. We work with educators to review, revise, or develop new standards; prioritize standards to ensure balanced and realistic curricula; design classroom activities and assessments aligned with standards; and integrate performance standards into classroom instruction. Our Compendium of K-12 content standards and related tools offers educators a rich resource for designing standards-based units.

Teacher Preparation & Retention

Using research to guide teacher preparation

McREL works to help teacher preparation institutions apply 30 years of research on effective instruction to their programs.

Most notably, in 2002, McREL published the manual, Levers of Change: Transforming Teacher Preparation to provide teacher preparation programs with lessons from nine exemplary institutions of teacher preparation.

McREL has also created several related policy briefs, listed below. We invite you to explore these resources to learn more about how teacher preparation programs can ensure that a well-prepared, capable teacher is in every classroom.
