McREL: Turning what works in teaching, leading, and learning into innovation and results

Scaffolding Early Literacy Workshop

Goals/Objectives  This workshop, designed by Elena Bodrova, co-author of the popular publication Tools of the Mind, builds on rigorous research to provide educators with practical guidance on the following topics:
  • critical theoretical principles that should guide the literacy instruction of young children,
  • the relationship between early literacy development and later academic achievement,
  • what to look for when setting early literacy standards and benchmarks,
  • how to implement both standards-based instruction and developmentally appropriate practices in an early childhood classroom,
  • how to use early literacy assessment to inform classroom instruction,
  • how to use imaginative play to develop children's self-regulation skills, and
  • the most effective teaching strategies to use with preschool and kindergarten children.
Description  Giving students the right start in developing their literacy skills is crucial to their later academic success. This two-day workshop provides an introduction to McREL's Scaffolding Early Literacy professional development program. Videotapes and student work products engage workshop participants in scaffolding early literacy principles in an early childhood classroom.
