Scaffolding Early Literacy Program

Goals/Objectives  McREL's Scaffolding Early Literacy program consists of:
  1. An early literacy curriculum and instructional approach, focused around A Framework for Early Literacy Instruction. Instruction is characterized by a focus on specific literacy prerequisites identified by research as having the greatest impact on reading and writing (e.g., oral language, phonemic awareness, knowledge of letters), and on foundational skills, such as self-regulation, that affect literacy learning and learning in other areas.
  2. A program of professional development that links theoretical concepts with teaching and provides opportunities for teachers to practice new applications with ample feedback.
Description  Based on an analysis of the client’s current early literacy program, professional development is customized to meet client needs. Staff development ranges from 2-day introductory sessions to long-term, intensive and comprehensive professional development that helps districts build capacity and become self-sustaining in the program.

Scaffolding Early Literacy is being implemented currently in three Early Reading First grant sites, as well as numerous other preschool and kindergarten programs throughout the nation.
