Target Audience  Administrators
Policymakers
Ways to Use this Product
  • To stimulate reflection and discussion among education leaders and policymakers about the role of leaders in sustaining school improvement
  • To assist researchers in identifying areas of future work in the area of leadership
  • As a tool to build the leadership capacity of teachers, students, parents, and administrators to bring about fundamental change
Key Ideas
  • Effective leadership is a key component of lasting school improvement. But conventional notions of leadership may not be enough to bring about ongoing, fundamental change. Educators must reconceptualize leadership as something larger than one person with a specific set of traits or skills
  • For school improvement to be sustained, a broad-based, shared sense of leadership must be created. Building the capacity of many -- teachers, parents, and students, as well as superintendents, principals, and board members -- to engage in leading improvement efforts is critical.
