McREL: Turning what works in teaching, leading, and learning into innovation and results

Using Technology with Teaching Writing in the Content Areas

Goals/Objectives

In this workshop, you will

  • discuss the writing process and ways that technology effective instructional practices, and student writing come together to improve learning,
  • learn which Web sites and technologies support the writing process,
  • learn how to locate and use rubrics to assess learning and evaluate student writing,
  • learn how to implement an action plan for integrating technology into writing instruction when you return to the classroom.
Description  Would your students benefit from a step-by-step process designed to refine their writing skills?

How can technology be used to reinforce good writing practices in the content areas?

What assessment methods effectively evaluate student progress in writing?

Current research continues to reveal the importance of emphasizing writing as a process. This recursive process encourages student writers to test, evaluate, revisit, and clarify ideas. The opportunity to focus on one step at a time — to reflect and discover voice and ideas along the way — helps writing become an opportunity for learning. This workshop is appropriate for teachers of grades 4-12 in all content areas.

This workshop is based on Teaching Writing in the Content Areas (Urquhart, V. A. & McIver, M. C., 2005) and will provide teachers with a variety of technology tools to add to their practice.

These workshops are supported with participant manuals, which provide in-depth guidance related to the workshop content. These manuals can be purchased separately through McREL.
