What Works with ELLs: Academies for Instructional Leaders
Goals/Objectives
Lead the way to ELL proficiency Are your English language learners (ELLs) still struggling to reach proficiency in language acquisition or content areas?
This academy for instructional leaders is designed to help you get your entire school focused on proven, practical strategies for improving ELL achievement.
Instruction: Learn the stages and theories of language acquisition and how they relate to instruction. Also learn how to use data and instructional strategies to improve ELL achievement.
Leadership: Learn how to create a “purposeful community” in your school—one that is committed to the success of every ELL student. Gain new insights into leading change, sharing leadership, and using data to reflect on and sustain improvement efforts.
Description
A team-based approach to success Because professional development is most effective when it supports collegial learning, we’ve designed our academies for school-based teams of up to four members. We recommend that teams include a principal (participation required), a staff developer, lead teacher, and ESL staff member.
Intensive, yet affordable To ensure that participants gain the knowledge and skills they need to make a real difference for ELL students, we provide intensive, ongoing guidance through five, 2-day sessions presented at your site over a 12–18-month period. Up to 20 school-based teams can participate in a single academy (which may be sponsored by districts, states, or regional service agencies), making the program very cost-effective on a per-school basis.
