Making Afterschool Count: Mathematics Learning in Afterschool

Goals/Objectives  Often, there's simply not enough time during the regular school day to give students the learning opportunities they need to achieve success in mathematics.

This session (which can be provided as a multi-day session or series of shorter workshops), shows afterschool program leaders and instructors how to boost student mathematics achievement through a variety of activities, including:

  • Playing engaging, educational mathematics "games;"

  • Teaching mathematics through activities students enjoy, such as cooking, sports, or crafts;

  • Working with hands-on mathematics tools and manipulatives;

  • Developing and supporting student mathematics "talk;" and

  • Encouraging mathematical problem solving.
