The View from the Balcony - School System Domains
When you are on the balcony, it helps to understand your school as a system if you are able to organize the parts into manageable pieces or "domains" and then look for interactions among those "domains."
While there are many ways to organize the parts or areas of a school system, McREL has chosen to use an organizer from Cordell and Waters (1993) who define three major facets or "domains" of school systems: the Technical Domain, the Personal Domain, and the Organizational Domain.
These domains can be thought of as "lenses" that school leaders can use to view their school systems in order to simplify their complexity. Obviously, this is not the only way to view a school system. But the three perspectives in this framework can help school leaders organize their thinking about school change and, thus, make better decisions.
