 | |  | | | | Goals/Objectives | The Central Region Educational Laboratory (REL Central) at McREL is seeking elementary schools in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri with more than one-quarter Spanish-speaking Limited English Proficient (LEP) student populations to participate in a field test of Harcourt Achieve's On Our Way to English (view brochure) and Responsive Instruction for Success in English (view brochure) programs. By participating in the study, schools will receive, free of charge, OWE materials, valued at approximately $2,500 per classroom, and RISE professional development, valued at approximately $5,000 per school.
| | Description | On Our Way to English provides a comprehensive set of classroom materials, assessment tools, and instructional strategies for elementary LEP students. Classroom materials support- Oral language development and shared reading & writing
- Guided reading/comprehension activities, and
- Grammar, phonics and word study
Responsive Instruction for Success in English is a professional development course designed to provide teachers with training and support for teaching LEP students. It consists of eight, two-hour sessions presented over the course of a school year, which are designed to help teachers:- Connect principles of learning theory to second-language learning and literacy development
- Demonstrate an understanding of assessment and how it guides instruction
- Use a practitioner framework for making sound instructional decisions
- Articulate knowledge of small group strategic instruction for reading and writing
- Use leveled texts to improve comprehension
- Use student data to inform teaching
- Extend their range of teaching and assessment approaches
To study these programs scientifically, McREL will randomly assign schools participating in the study either to an "early group" that will use the RISE & OWE programs in the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years, or a "later group" that will continue using its regular classroom materials and professional development program, engaging in the OWE and RISE programs upon completion of the study.

- serve students in grades 1-5
- have populations of 20% or more Spanish-speaking, LEP students, and
- have not already used OWE materials or received RISE training.
