Goals/Objectives  

Developing Professional Developers is McREL’s term for training of trainers

In this three-day workshop, participants will

• Understand the research behind McREL's instructional strategies that are linked to enhanced student achievement.
• Learn about the importance of stages of second language acquisition and their instructional implications.
• Learn strategies for engaging English language learners in K-12 mainstream classrooms.
• Understand the critical content and facilitation skills necessary to teach the strategies to other educators.


This Developing Professional Developers program prepares English as a Second Language staff developers/coaches to provide Classroom Instruction that Works with English Language Learners professional development sessions to support mainstream teachers in providing high-quality instruction for English language learners.

Based on McREL's popular book, Classroom Instruction That Works for English Language Learners, this workshop applies nine categories of research-based instructional strategies to five stages of language acquisition. Participants learn how to adapt these strategies, many of which they may already be using, to successfully engage and raise the achievement of English language learners in mainstream classrooms.

The Classroom Instruction that Works with English Language Learners workshop is modeled for attendees on the first two days and, on the third day, they work on their skills as facilitators and practice delivering parts of the workshop.
