In session two of the Mathematics Leadership Institute, participants will

  • Learn how to further develop and implement the team's improvement plan,

  • Learn how to use research to support the district's vision of mathematics education,

  • Learn strategies that ensure the mathematics curriculum is aligned and articulated,

  • Learn the knowledge and skills students should learn under the Algebra standard,

  • Learn how to incorporate algebra concepts in mathematics problems,

  • Learn how to define specific, measurable, attainable goals,

  • Learn how to increase team effectiveness,

  • Learn criteria for worthwhile mathematical tasks, and

  • Learn characteristics of and ways to manage change phases
Description  Session two content focuses on the Algebra standard. As part of their work on developing an effective mathematics curriculum, participants learn how to identify specific statements of knowledge and skills embedded in standards and benchmarks (a process referred to as "unpacking").

During an activity on effective mathematics curriculum and instruction, participants learn how to determine the cognitive level of a mathematics task and whether it is "worthwhile."

As part of the leadership strand, teams learn to distinguish between first- and second-order change and strategies for helping staff deal with the three stages of transition that result from change.

To support development of their plan, teams learn how to define goals for improvement and how to increase the effectiveness of their team.
