Mathematics Leadership Institute: Session 1
 

 
Goals/Objectives

In session one of the Mathematics Leadership Institute, participants will

  • Learn the characteristics of an effective mathematics curriculum,

  • Learn the knowledge and skills that students should learn under the Number and Operations standard,

  • Learn how to incorporate Number and Operations concepts in mathematics problems,

  • Learn the role of the team in leading improvement in mathematics teaching and learning,

  • Learn the basics of the change process, and

  • Learn the components of a comprehensive plan for improving mathematics teaching and learning.
Description  During session one, teams become familiar with the goals and outcomes of the institute as well as the structures (mixed groups for problem solving, team time) and processes (structured conversations, debriefing problem-solving sessions) that they will use during the sessions.

Participants read about and discuss NCTM's principles and standards and solve a problem that highlights the Number Sense and Operations standard.

Session One also introduces the team to ideas about the change process and the team's role in developing a plan for implementing a new vision of mathematics education.
