The study described in this research brief was intended to address the issue of student dropout rates through a comprehensive and detailed analysis of those and high school graduation rates in the Central Region (Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming).

Key Ideas:

The study found:

  • Dropout rates in grades 7–12 ranged from 1.4 to 4.0 percent and were higher for males
  • Dropout rates were higher in urban areas and in grades 9–11
  • Graduation rates varied markedly across ethnic groups in each state
