Key Ideas
This study describes ways in which rural high schools in the Central Region have attempted to recruit and retain teachers. For this study, McREL analyzed data from the 2003–2004 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) and interviewed principals from high and combined (K–12, 6–12) schools that have been successful in recruiting and retaining teachers.  The project included three phases: (1) a descriptive analysis of the SASS data on recruiting in different locales in the Central Region; (2) categorizing rural high schools as "successful" or "unsuccessful" in recruiting and retaining teachers and then comparing the groups on recruiting and retention strategies included in the SASS data; (3) follow-up telephone interviews with principals from seven schools who reported being successful in rural teacher recruitment and retention.
