Our Work: Curriculum & Instruction
Instruction
Research shows that student achievement is directly affected by instruction. One challenge for schools and districts is keeping up with that research; another is applying it in meaningful ways. To provide teachers with guiding principles for refining their practices, McREL translates its research on effective instruction into widely used guidebooks and professional development offerings.
Classroom instruction that works
McREL’s best-selling manual, Classroom Instruction that Works (CITW),
identifies nine categories of instructional strategies that research
says improve student learning. Teachers tell us that experiencing the
strategies for themselves through McREL’s professional development
gives them the “when, why, and how” they need to implement
the strategies in their classrooms. McREL offers CITW workshops,
an online course, and training-of-trainer sessions for professional developers.
CITW (Basic & Advanced)
These workshops (basic and advanced) begins with the big picture and moves right into the classroom. More than a decade after its initial publication, McREL’s Dimensions of Learning (DOL) program remains a much-used tool for ensuring that instruction, curriculum, and assessment are all learner-centered. Its premise is that five types of thinking—what we call the five dimensions of learning—are essential to successful learning. The DOL framework continues to be used by schools and districts worldwide. McREL offers both basic and advanced workshops and consulting on how to use Dimensions along with Classroom Instruction that Work as a framework for a district- or school-wide instructional program.
