McREL’s Anne Tweed Takes Helm of National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)
June 1, 2004
Aurora, Colo. — Anne Tweed, a Senior Consultant at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), in Aurora, Colo., begins her tenure today as President of the world’s largest science education organization — the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The 56,000 members cast their supporting votes months ago, following a nomination process that required multiple letters of support.
Tweed spent most of her 30-year teaching career with the Cherry Creek School District in Colorado, where she taught many courses, including environmental science, biology, marine science, and advanced placement classes, at Smoky Hill and Eaglecrest high schools. As NSTA’s president, she hopes to keep science education at the top of school’s list of priorities. “NSTA wants to ensure that science continues to be considered a major content area, along with mathematics and English, and that all students get the science education they need and deserve,” said Tweed. “If there was just one thing to accomplish this year, it would be to put policies and plans in place that ensure all students receive a high-quality science education from well-prepared science teachers,” said Tweed.A veteran educator, Tweed was a Colorado state finalist for the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching program, Outstanding Biology Teacher, Gustav Ohaus winner for Innovations in Science Teaching, and Colorado Distinguished High School Science Teacher, among others. At McREL, she helps school districts carry out efforts to improve science instruction at the secondary level. “Anne brings an incredible combination of enthusiasm, optimism, experience, and science education knowledge to her role at McREL,” said Tim Waters, McREL President and CEO. “I expect to see NSTA initiatives such as the e-Mentoring program flourish with her leadership.”
Tweed earned an M.S. degree in botany from the University of Minnesota, a B.A. degree in biology from Colorado College, and a teaching certificate from the University of Colorado.
