Former principal joins McREL’s leadership team

August 6, 2008

DenverMelvin J. Sussman, an educator with more than 35 years experience as a teacher and administrator, has joined Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning as a principal consultant on the leadership team.

Most recently, Sussman served as principal of North Valley Middle School in LaSalle, Colo. He has also held positions as an assistant principal, a district communications technology coordinator, and teacher of journalism, English, and language arts, mostly in the Philadelphia, Pa., area.

While at North Valley Middle School, Sussman worked with McREL for three years in implementing McREL's Classroom Instruction that Works program. "These sessions were integral in helping us to increase student achievement and made a huge impression on me as to the benefit of high-quality research," he said. "I felt I might be the type of individual who could provide that same message to other administrators and help them have the same type of success within their schools." He will have the opportunity to share "the research message" to education leaders around the country while delivering McREL's Balanced Leadership professional development program.

Sussman holds a master's degree in educational administration from Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., and a bachelor's degree in journalism from Temple University in Philadelphia.
