McREL’s new EdThoughts supports mathematics reform for all
June 30, 2008
Denver—Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) has published a second edition of EdThoughts: What We Know About Mathematics Teaching and Learning, updated to address the state of mathematics education today and offer guidance for improving student achievement in the future.
Heeding the increasingly urgent call for mathematics reform, the authors summarize educational research and surveys of best classroom practices and offer implications for improved teaching and learning.
Taking into account existing standards, the increased need for mathematical competency in today's world and the skills that students will need in the 21st century, the authors present the latest thinking on the essential topics for anyone interested in mathematics teaching and learning.
Written by McREL's mathematics experts and in a highly readable format for administrators, teachers, parents, and students, the book addresses such topics as equity in mathematics classrooms, instruction, assessment, curriculum, instructional technology, and learning.
In an era of high-stakes accountability and intense global competition, the authors write, "...we must apply lessons learned to achieve improved mathematics education for all students—a goal we cannot afford to ignore."
