Redmond, Oregon Superintendent Gary Peterson Joins McREL

April 20, 2007

Denver Gary Peterson, former superintendent of Redmond School District, Redmond, Oregon, has recently joined Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Denver, Colorado, as a principal consultant in field services. Mr. Peterson consults in McREL's Balanced Leadership program, providing professional development to school leaders nationwide. He also works with districts on their systemic improvement efforts and reform initiatives, as well as school board and district governance.

"In this era of increased accountability for schools and school leaders, I want to provide district leaders the high-quality information and relevant skills they need to improve achievement for all students," said Peterson, who has over 32 years of experience as an educator. "I look forward to combining McREL's research-based findings on school leadership with my experience as a teacher, principal, and superintendent," he said.

Peterson earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Oregon State University and a master's degree in elementary education from Western Oregon University. He taught in a K–8 school for 14 years before entering school administration as a high school assistant principal and principal. He later served as district superintendent in the Dayton, Crook County, and Redmond school districts in Oregon.

In addition, Mr. Peterson was a commissioner for the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools, a member of the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission, and an adjunct professor in school reform and leadership for Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Immediately prior to coming to McREL, he was director of administrative services for the Oregon Association of Education Service Districts.
