Former Wyoming State Superintendent of Public Instruction receives NCA’s National John Vaughn Award

March 12, 2007

Tempe, Ariz. Judy Catchpole, President of Catchpole Enterprises Inc., Cheyenne, Wyo., is one of 13 educators who received the 2007 John Vaughn Excellence in Education Award from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) at the Annual Conference of the Commission held on April 2, 2007, in Chicago.

Judy Catchpole has served on the McREL Board of Directors since 1995. As a member of McREL's Board, Dr. Catchpole provides oversight and guidance to McREL, helping shape the organization's program of work and response to the needs of educators in Wyoming and the nation at large.

Every year NCA CASI invites teachers, administrators, students, parents, and community representatives to nominate people who motivate students to high levels of achievement, involve the community in substantive aspects of schooling, expand programs and services to meet the varying needs of students, and/or demonstrate a pioneering spirit that enables all schools and districts to move forward. The Commission then selects individuals to receive the award from across a 19-state region, including the Navajo Nation and the Department of Defense Education Activity. The award honors the memory of Dr. John W. Vaughn, who was Executive Director of NCA CASI prior to his death in 1986.

Ms. Catchpole's letter of nomination states that "…during her two terms as Wyoming 's State Superintendent of Public Instruction, she provided key leadership to develop the capacity of Wyoming schools in the areas of school improvement and accreditation. Her leadership positioned Wyoming schools to look at educational systems in a systemic way, working closely with schools to help them avoid duplication of effort, bringing school improvement to the forefront of the educational process."

Judy is also the recipient of the 2007 AdvancED NCA's Excellence in Education Award for the state of Wyoming . Judy has a passion for helping students learn and strives to find ways to make learning meaningful and fun for children.

Judy is a graduate of the University of Wyoming , has served on the Natrona County School Board and was the president of the Wyoming Early Childhood Association. She currently serves as an Executive Mentor/Coach for the Chief State School Officers. She is the past President of the UW College of Education Foundation Board and serves on numerous boards and commissions including Kennedy Western University and McREL. She is the Public Representative on the Wyoming NCA State Committee.
