North Dakota Legislator Joins McREL Board of Directors

June 20, 2005

Aurora, Colo. — N.D. House of Representatives member C. B. "Buck" Haas has joined the Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) Board of Directors. McREL is a nationally recognized, private, nonprofit organization located in Aurora, Colo., which uses high-quality research to help educators to improve student learning.

Haas is currently in his third term in the House of Representatives from District #36. With 33 years of experience in the public school systems of North Dakota, 23 years experience in operating a small business, and seven years in the House of Representatives, he has been a driving force in creating North Dakota's future. "We are very pleased to welcome Buck Haas to the McREL Board of Directors," said McREL President and CEO Tim Waters. "With his unique experience in school leadership, business, and policymaking, he will be great asset in helping guide the work of our organization."

As a former superintendent of schools in Dickinson, North Dakota, Haas has in-depth knowledge of the challenges educators in rural areas face. "I see tremendous relevance to the needs of rural America in what McREL is doing," Haas remarked. "McREL products can benefit any teacher anywhere and provide desperately needed professional development opportunities."

McREL's 27-member Board represents educators, policymakers, and business people from the seven-state region - Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming - that McREL serves through contracts with the U.S. Department of Education. Through these competitive contracts, McREL helps policymakers and educators translate education research into policies and practices that lead to improved learning outcomes for students.

Other McREL Board members from North Dakota include Cheryl Kulas, Director of the Indian Affairs Commission of the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, and Wayne Sanstead, Superintendent of the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction. In 2004, McREL delivered services to clients in 37 states and two foreign countries and had annual revenues of more than $13.2 million.
