Indiana Gov. Honors McREL Staff Members for Helping Indiana Schools
Improve
June 11, 2003
Indianapolis,
Ind. — McREL’s work with the state
of Indiana was recognized today with a formal commendation from
Indiana Governor Frank O’Bannon.
McREL staff members Jane Doty, Diane Paynter, and Salle Quackenboss
received the awards for their contributions and service to the state
from Ilene Block of the Indiana Department of Education.
Since 1999, McREL has worked with more than 30 schools across the
state of Indiana. Working through a consortium model, McREL delivered
intensive site work, ongoing training, and support to school, district,
and state teams, which remained focused on the same goal: improving
student achievement.
“Our consortia create not only supportive learning environments
for school improvement teams, but also allow us to provide many hours
of training and expert guidance at an affordable cost,” noted
McREL CEO Tim Waters. “Above all else, though, our consortia
are effective.”
Indeed, as a result of hard work and commitment
from state and local educators, the schools participating in McREL’s first two consortia
in Indiana have demonstrated gains in student achievement — some
of them dramatic. Cannelton City Schools, for example, saw student
achievement rise 32 percent while working with McREL.
McREL has captured these success stories in a seven-minute
video, A TOPHAT Consortium Story. The video, available
as a CD-ROM, is part of a packet that describes McREL’s consortia
approach to school improvement. To request this packet of materials,
