11 McREL researchers and evaluators to present
at American Educational Research Association
Annual Conference

March 28 , 2005

Montréal — Eleven McREL researchers and evaluators will present at the 2005 Annual Conference of the American Educational Research Association in Montréal on April 11-15. The theme for this year’s conference is Demography and Democracy in the Era of Accountability.

On Monday, April 11, McREL will present a panel session on Applied Research in an Experimental Research World: Is There a Place? The following individual presentations will be given during this session (presenters in parentheses):

  • “Understanding Implications and Refining Policy Implementations.” (Sheila Arens & Kerry Englert)
  • “Context Issues in Understanding Effective Practice.” (Helen Apthorp)
  • “The Gold Standard of Research Syntheses: What Makes Sense?” (Zoe Barley)
  • “Educating Policymakers on How to Use Research Findings.” (Patricia Lauer)

Lou Cicchinelli will serve as Chair of this panel session and LeAnn Gamache will serve as a Discussant.

On Wednesday, April 13, McREL researchers and evaluators will give the following presentations during the session titled, Understanding Accountability from Different Lenses (presenters in parentheses):

  • “Accountability: The Parent and Community Lens.” (Sheila Arens & Mariana Enriquez-Olmos)
  • “Accountability: The District Administrator Lens.” (Kerry Englert)
  • “Accountability: The Principal Lens.” (Mya Martin-Glenn)

Rebecca Van Buhler and Patricia Lauer will present Beating the Odds: The Influence of Teacher Professional Development and Conditions that Support It on April 14.

Kirsten Stoutemyer and Patricia Lauer present on Friday, April 15, Can Online Professional Development Increase Rural Teacher Retention and Rural Administrator Leadership? Also, on Friday, April 15, Patricia Lauer and Helen Apthorp will present The Effectiveness of Out-of-School-Time Strategies in Assisting Low-Achieving Students in Reading and Mathematics.
