High School Seniors Sought for National Youth Science Camp®
February 8, 2006
AURORA, Colo.
— Governor Bill Owens invites Colorado high school seniors with demonstrated academic achievement in science to apply for scholarships to attend the National Youth Science Camp® (NYSC®), a science honors program to be held in West Virginia this summer.
Earl Legleiter, a senior science consultant at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), an education research organization located in Denver, Colo., will review applications and select the two most qualified students to receive scholarships for the three-week camp. Selection is based on both science achievement and participation in school and community.
Colorado's delegates will join other high school seniors from around the country and the world for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, which includes hands-on research projects, lectures and seminars, and in-depth research investigations, led by prominent scientists and science educators. In addition, delegates will travel to Washington, D.C., for three days to study national science concerns in meetings with scientists and visits to research sites.
The NYSC® program is offered at no cost to its participants, so that selected delegates may attend regardless of their financial status. Through contributions from the National Youth Science Foundation®, delegates receive educational and recreational programming, as well as meals, lodging, and round-trip air passage on scheduled airlines all free of charge. More information about the camp is available online at www.nysc.org.
Delegates will arrive in Charleston, W.V., on Sunday, June 25, and will depart on Sunday, July 16. The camp is held at Bartow in the eastern mountains of West Virginia, near the Monongahela National Forest. To receive an application packet, contact Earl Legleiter at 303.632.5630 or elegleiter@mcrel.org. Deadline for applications is March 3, 2005.
