McREL honors Wyo. Sen. Mike Enzi’s commitment to
rural education

September 14, 2004

Washington D.C. — Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) recognized Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) for his longstanding commitment to rural education during a Capitol Hill reception on Sept. 14.

In introducing Enzi, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) noted that while he and Enzi are from different political parties and may have different views on policies, Enzi’s personality and character have won him many admirers on the other side of the aisle. “It’s hard to disagree with someone as nice as Mike Enzi,” said Kennedy. “That’s why he has so many Democrat friends. And that’s why I’m proud to call him a friend.”

Judy Catchpole, former education commissioner of Wyoming and a member of McREL’s Board of Directors, presented Enzi with a donated print of the Wilson Schoolhouse, one of Wyoming’s first schoolhouses. “It is an honor and privilege to say thank you to Senator Enzi for all he’s done for kids in rural America.” Catchpole noted that as the co-founder of the Rural Education Caucus, Sen. Enzi has been instrumental in ensuring that Congress continues to address the needs of America’s rural students.

In accepting the gift, Sen. Enzi praised McREL’s efforts to provide research-based guidance aimed at improving student achievement in Wyoming.

As the regional educational laboratory and Eisenhower Regional Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science for seven largely rural states in the nation’s heartland — Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming — much of McREL’s work to provide comprehensive school improvement solutions continues to support rural schools.

“The bipartisan nature of this event demonstrates that education research and development isn’t about advancing any particular political ideology,” said Tim Waters, McREL’s President and CEO. “It’s about doing something that everyone agrees is important — helping schools become places where all students succeed.”

“This award acknowledges what McREL’s clients and constituents already recognize — that our talented, dedicated staff members create high-quality, relevant, and useful products for improving student achievement,” said McREL President and CEO Tim Waters.
