Distinguished Educator Ausfahl Joins McREL Board
of Directors

October 14, 2003

Aurora, Colo. Distinguished Colorado educator Beverly Ausfahl has been elected to the Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) Board of Directors. McREL is a nationally recognized, private, nonprofit organization located in Aurora, Colo., which uses high-quality research on effective schools and classrooms to help educators to maximize student learning.

“Beverly’s background, knowledge, and experience will be indispensable to the McREL Board,” said McREL President and CEO Tim Waters. “She has been involved in education at every level, and wherever she has been — whether it was as a classroom teacher or as president of the Colorado Education Association — Beverly has worked to improve and strengthen that place.”

“McREL is known for its high-quality research and commitment to helping make education as effective as possible. I’ve always worked toward that goal, and as a Board member, I will be taking another step toward enhancing the education process for all educators and students,” said Ausfahl.

McREL’s 27-member Board represents educators, policymakers, and business people from the seven-state region — Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming — that McREL serves through contracts with the U.S. Department of Education. Through these competitive contracts, McREL helps policymakers and educators translate education research into policies and practices that lead to improved learning outcomes for students.

In Colorado, for example, McREL has been working with building leaders and teachers in Ignacio Intermediate School to develop and field test effective ways to help rural schools carry out improvement efforts. McREL consultants are working closely with the school’s leadership team to help them improve student literacy.

Other McREL Board members from Colorado include William Moloney, commissioner of the Colorado Department of Education and Dan Morris, an education consultant. McREL Policy Advisory Panel Members from Colorado are Kenneth DeLay, executive director of Colorado Association of School Boards and Pamela Jo Suckla, Colorado State Board of Education member.

In 2002, McREL delivered services to clients in 40 states and seven foreign countries and had annual revenues of more than $11 million.
