McREL: Turning what works in teaching, leading, and learning into innovation and results

Nabu's Knee-knocker SignSolution

  1. The size of the square (side length) added to the pattern at each step is given in this sequence.

Notice that the next square has side length equal to the sum of the side lengths of the previous two squares.

    1 + 1 = 2, 1 + 2 = 3, 2 + 3 = 5, 3 + 5 = 8, 5 + 8 = 13,
    8 + 13 = 21, 13 + 21 = 34, 21 + 34 = 55

The tenth square in the pattern is a 55-inch square.

  2. The size of the rectangular quilt at each step is given in this table.

Notice that the next rectangle at each step has one side the same as the longer side of the previous rectangle, and the other side equal to the sum of the length and width of the previous rectangle.

Quincy's quilt (with ten squares in the pattern) is a rectangle that measures 55 inches by 89 inches. Its area is 4895 square inches (55 x 89 = 4895).
