McREL: Turning what works in teaching, leading, and learning into innovation and results

Nabu's Knee-knocker SignSolution

Notice that the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th blanks have this relationship.

    list price
     -
    discount
     =
    selling price

There are two sets of numbers that could fit.

    $20 - $7.90 = $12.10
    and $16 - $4.80 = $11.20

The discount must be 30%, because $4.80 = 30% of $16.

Discount Daisy's sells books for
30   % off their list price. "Half Magic"
lists for $
   16    . At Discount Daisy's
the price of this book is $
  4.80   less
than the list price, so it sells for $
  11.20  .
Marvin gives the clerk $
   20    to pay for one
copy of "Half Magic." The book costs $
  12.10
with tax, so Marvin gets $
   7.90   in change.
