New Teachers Face Three Common Challenges

The first year of teaching is not easy—in fact, 15 percent of new teachers leave the profession after the first year, and 14 percent change schools. McREL’s Bryan Goodwin describes three common challenges: New teachers often lack classroom management skills; have little guidance in lesson and unit planning; and don’t get the support they need from other teachers or their principals. He suggests administrators make investments in new teachers early on, such as providing effective mentors, scheduling planning periods with colleagues, and reducing workloads.
