Opportunity and Challenge: The 15% Rule

The State Education Standard

The Common Core State Standards represent, for any given subject area, 85 percent of the total number of standards—meaning states that adopted the Common Core have the option of identifying as much as 15 percent in additional standards. What do those standards include? How are they being addressed in curriculum, instruction, and assessment? In this article in the August issue of The State Education Standard, McREL’s John Kendall and Susan Ryan summarize their recent study on how states have responded and suggest a variety of ways that other states might consider taking advantage of this optional “15 percent.”
