McREL Board of Directors to Meet in Denver January 6-7

For immediate release

DENVER, Colo. — The Board of Directors for Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) will meet in Denver on January 6-7. McREL is a nationally recognized, private, nonprofit organization located in Aurora, Colo. It is dedicated to improving education for all students through applied research, product development and service.

McREL’s 27-member Board represents educators, policymakers and business people from the seven-state region-Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming-that McREL serves through contracts with the U.S. Department of Education. Through these competitive contracts, McREL provides research-based products and services to educators and policymakers.

In Colorado, for example, McREL has been analyzing the state's alternative teacher preparation programs in partnership with the Alliance for Quality Teaching. McREL has also convened community dialogues and focus groups on standards, testing and accountability as part of its National Dialogue on Standards-based Education. In early 2004, McREL and Denver-based Education Commission of the States will jointly publish a guide designed to help policymakers understand and make use of education research.

Active McREL Board members from Colorado include Dan Morris, co-director of The Colorado Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology; former Colorado Education Association president Beverly Ausfahl; and Henry Gonzalez, director of human resources at Fountain-Fort Carson School District Eight.

In addition, Ken DeLay, executive director of the Colorado Association of School Boards, and Pamela Jo Suckla, who represents Colorado's 3rd Congressional District on the state board of education, serve on McREL's policy advisory team. Robert Adams, superintendent of Aurora Public Schools; Joyce Bales, superintendent of Pueblo School District, and Norman Ridder, superintendent of Colorado Springs District 11; participate in McREL's network of urban superintendents.

In 2003, McREL delivered services to clients in 33 states and Canada and had annual revenues of more than $12.4 million. To learn more about McREL, visit our online newsroom.
