Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Can organizations submit more than one application during a grant cycle?

A:  We recognize that some organizations may have multiple programs consistent with the criteria outlined in the RFP. However, organizations with programs in multiple North Carolina counties should submit a proposal for one county only. Organizations may apply for support for different programs over the three year life of the program. See page 1 in RFP for more information.

Q:  Can fraternal organizations apply through their foundations?

A:  Fraternal and faith-based organizations and their foundations may not apply, but are encouraged to partner with eligible non-profit organizations.

Q:  Are universities excluded from applying for the Ribbon of Hope Project?

A:  Public and private universities can partner with their university’s foundation or another non-profit 501c3 organization in order to be eligible for the grant.

Q:  What kind of letter does the non-profit 501c3 organization need to include in their application packet from the collaborating partner(s)?

A:  Anytime there is a collaborative arrangement between a non-profit organization and an organization such as a school, school district, or any other organization, the non-profit organization must include a letter of commitment from the leadership demonstrating their support for the project. Please see page 4 of RFP for more information.

Q:  Does the Foundation fund proposals aimed at building an endowment?

A:  No, not through the Ribbon of Hope. The Foundation funds programs that emphasize the understanding and application of health, science, and education to meet the needs of North Carolina’s citizens and communities. Proposals should relate to the establishment and implementation of projects tightly aligned with the goals and objectives of local community agencies.

Q:  Does the Foundation fund proposals to continue existing programs?

A:  Yes. These grants will support activities that establish or expand local programs in health, science, and education to serve identified needs of local communities.

Q:  Are state government programs eligible for the Ribbon of Hope program?

A:  Only programs who meet 501(c)(3) status are eligible for funding.  State government programs may apply as a partner with a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

Q:  Our program exists in more than one North Carolina county.  For which county should we write our proposal?

A:  Please choose the county which you feel is most underserved or has the greatest need for your services.

Q:  Our program or idea doesn’t fit any of the four focus areas outlined in the RFP.  Can we still apply for a Ribbon of Hope award?

A:  The Foundation is dedicated to funding proposals that advance education, science and health in local communities.  Priority will be given proposals that are carefully aligned with the four focus areas in the RFP.  For additional information please see the GSK Foundation - North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation website.

Q:  What is the standard award amount?

A:  Each organization awarded funding will receive $25,000.

Q:  In what time frame are award recipients required to spend the award money?

A:  There is no required time frame. The awards are disbursed in lump sums of $25,000. Proposals should reflect the time period over which the organization intends to utilize the funds. We believe this could be anywhere from 1-5 years (or more) depending on the program.

Q:  May our agency apply for funding for more than one program in more than one county?

A:  Yes. Please indicate clearly that you are applying for multiple programs and/or sites so we may cross-reference your proposals.
