We can help education agencies address this ARRA reform goal in two important ways.
1. Improving teacher and principal effectiveness based on performance.
McREL has designed and validated rigorous, transparent, and fair personnel evaluation systems for teachers and principals.
Based on research on what effective teachers and principals do to raise student achievement, our evaluation systems measure “what matters most” and provide teachers and principals with feedback to improve. [Read related story].
2. Providing effective support to teachers and principals.
McREL provides a diverse selection of staff development and training-of-trainer programs and support for teacher leaders. We can deliver these services directly or co-develop them with districts and schools:
Balanced Leadership. Our leadership development programs help school and district administrators translate research into action. Learn more.
Classroom Instruction that Works (CITW). Through workshops and training-of-trainers, we help teachers apply the guidance from our widely used book to improve student learning by understanding not only which strategies to use, but also when, why, and how to use them.
Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners (ELLs). Based on our ASCD title of the same name, our workshops, leadership academies, and training-of-trainers help mainstream classroom teachers understand the stages of second language acquisition and how to adapt for ELLs the nine categories of effective instructional strategies described in CITW.
Literacy in the content areas. Based on our widely used book series, Teaching Reading in the Content Areas, we offer several workshops designed to improve reading and writing instruction in every classroom.
Vocabulary instruction that works. Building students’ academic vocabulary can generate immediate gains in performance. Our workshops provide teachers with practical ways to expand their students’ vocabularies.
Technology integration. We help educators make better use of technology to improve student achievement. We offer workshops related to our popular manual Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works, and a technology audit, to help districts and schools identify ways to maximize their technology investment.
